FAQ Kokikai Aikido
Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
What is Kokikai Aikido?
It is a defensive, nonviolent, Japanese martial art in which we use the opponent's energy rather than our own to overcome the opponent. Thus you do not have to be really big and strong to be good at it. Men and women of all ages and physical compostions excel at Kokikai Aikido!
Do I have to have any prior experience in martial arts or otherwise to join?
Prior experience is not necessary! All you need is enthusiasm and interest. As you practice, you will become more flexible, stronger, more coordinated, balanced, and comfortable with the way the human body moves.
What should I wear?
A judo Gi is recommended for Aikido practice. It is included in the beginner's program. Sweatpants and a t-shirt or longsleeved sweatshirt are acceptable until your have your gi. Gis are always available for purchase through the dojo.

How often are belt tests done?
The short answer: Don't worry about it. Focus instead on constantly improving coordination of mind and body. But if you're really insistent: Testing depends upon individual attendance and progress. There are minimum time and attendance requirements. You are not tested very often. If you practice regularly, expect to be tested at most twice in your first year. After that you will probably be tested only once a year.
How is our aikido different from that of other Aikido clubs?
There are many differences and similarities. Kokikai founder, Shuji Maruyama lives in Japan and travels to the United States three times per year to give classes and seminars. He regularly refines the techniques we practice to make them stronger and we gain from his knowledge. We are fortunate that he makes a special visit to Boston in November of each year.
